Linen Backing & Restoration Services
Last updated: July 16th, 2026
These Terms & Conditions govern any linen backing, paper backing, or restoration services ("Services") provided by Vintage Horror ("we," "us," "our") on posters, lobby cards, pulp magazines, or other paper ephemera ("Items") submitted by a customer ("you," "your"). By submitting an Item for Services, you agree to the terms below.
1. Nature of the Service
Linen backing is a conservation process in which an original paper Item is mounted onto acid-free paper and cotton canvas using water-based, reversible adhesives. Depending on the scope of work agreed with you, it may also include:
- Flattening of fold lines and creases
- Cleaning and de-acidification (rehydrating the paper to reduce brittleness and staining)
- Mending of tears and reattachment of loose fragments
- Filling of paper loss using archival matching stock
- Color retouching of fold lines, tears, or areas of paper loss
We use professional-grade materials and techniques and follow accepted industry conservation standards. However, linen backing and restoration are performed on original, often decades-old paper stock, and the condition, printing method, and prior handling of each Item is unique and cannot always be fully assessed in advance. As a result, outcomes cannot be guaranteed, and no two Items respond to treatment in exactly the same way.
2. Known Risks of Linen Backing and Restoration
Before submitting an Item, you acknowledge and accept that the following outcomes are possible, even when Services are performed with reasonable care and in line with standard industry practice:
- Color or ink detachment/lifting. Some printing methods — particularly silkscreen or heavily inked posters — apply ink in thick layers that can crack, flake, or lift during the wetting, mounting, or pressing stages of the process. This is one of the most common risks and is not always predictable in advance.
- Dye migration or bleeding. Water-based inks or dyes may bleed or shift slightly during rehydration or washing.
- Minor, irreversible color or brightness loss. Bleaching or washing to reduce foxing, staining, or browning can, in some cases, cause slight and permanent fading or loss of original color saturation.
- Delamination. Card stock items such as lobby cards, inserts, or window cards can separate at the layers of the stock during handling or mounting.
- Further tearing or loss at existing fold lines and weak points. Items that arrive already brittle, torn, or damaged are inherently more fragile and may sustain additional, unavoidable damage during handling, flattening, or mounting.
- Trimming. Margins may be very slightly trimmed as part of achieving a flat, presentable mount.
- Adhesive or residue reactions. Prior repairs, tape, or adhesives applied to an Item before it reaches us can react unpredictably with conservation materials.
- Variance from the item's pre-treatment appearance. Because we work with organic, aged materials, the final appearance is a best professional effort, not a precise or guaranteed restoration to "as new" condition.
These risks are inherent to the linen backing and restoration process itself and are not necessarily the result of negligence.
3. Our Commitment to You
We take the condition and value of every Item seriously. If damage occurs during our Services that is attributable to our handling or process:
- Replacement. Where reasonably possible, we will attempt to source and provide a comparable replacement copy of the same item, in a condition we believe to be fair and reasonable given the original.
- Refund. Where a suitable replacement is not available, or you would prefer not to accept one, we will refund the amount paid for the Item and/or the Services, as applicable and agreed with you at the time.
We will always communicate with you if an issue arises during the process before proceeding further, wherever practically possible, and will work with you in good faith to reach a fair resolution.
4. Limitations of Liability
- Our liability in connection with any loss or damage to an Item during Services is limited to the remedies described in Section 3 (replacement or refund), and will not exceed the value you paid for the Item and/or the Services, whichever is applicable.
- We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential losses, including loss of collectible or resale value beyond the original item's value, lost profits, or loss of anticipated appreciation in value.
- We are not responsible for pre-existing damage, prior repairs, or conditions not disclosed or not reasonably visible to us at the time the Item was submitted.
- Nothing in these Terms limits any liability that cannot be limited or excluded under applicable Canadian or provincial consumer protection law.
5. Your Acknowledgment
By submitting an Item for linen backing or restoration Services, you confirm that:
- You understand linen backing and restoration involve inherent risk, including but not limited to those described in Section 2.
- You accept that outcomes cannot be guaranteed due to the nature of the original materials.
- You agree that our sole responsibility for damage arising from our Services is limited to the replacement or refund remedy described in Section 3.
- You have disclosed any known prior damage, repairs, or condition issues with the Item to the best of your knowledge.
6. Turnaround Time and Communication
Linen backing and restoration timelines vary depending on the scope of work and current volume. We will provide an estimated timeframe when you submit your Item and will notify you of any significant delays or issues that arise during the process.
7. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein.
