Deep in a Japanese mining town, a series of mysterious deaths leads investigators to discover giant prehistoric insect larvae living in flooded mine tunnels. Their search awakens something far more massive and ancient: two giant pteranodon-like creatures, Rodan, whose supersonic flight generates shockwaves capable of leveling buildings, and who go on to lay waste to the city of Fukuoka as the military scrambles to stop them.
